The documentary is about Chinese enterprises and the capital market, telling a story of an enterprise in Gobi desert in Northwestern China its employees who struggled for change in a desperate situation. In 2009, the global financial crisis put the former leading enterprise on the verge of bankruptcy, leaving 1200 employees struggling on the edge of poverty. Live or die? A battle was waged between different parties.

The production team regards Chinese enterprises as special subjects of life, whose destinies are determined by government policies, and the fate of every individual involved is changed by the entity's decisions. Such involuntary situation is a particular phenomenon in China's transformation. By using a new narrative and storytelling approach, the team recorded how Chinese enterprises and their people survive in a complex and volatile society, how enterprises ups and downs influence each individual, and vividly presented an authentic case for audience to learn a real China.

A Harsh Transition won the best Society Concern Documentary Award at 2016 International "Gold Pand" Documentary Festival, the Best Editing Award and nominated for the Best Feature Documentary and Grand Jury Award at 2016 China Academy Awards for Documentary Film, as well as the Best Promotion Award of the 9th China M&A Service Awards.
