Searching for the Last Pangolin
In an unnoticed forest near the Pearl River Delta, the most prosperous metropolitan area in China, Li Cheng is guiding his team to search for one kind of mysterious mammal, which is called Chinese Pangolin. This creature possesses great importance in Chinese traditional culture. It is almost known to every household. However, they are on the brink of extinction now. In the past ten years, nobody has seen them in the wild in mainland China. Li is making a last-ditch attempt to save this critically endangered species.
In the Pearl River Delta, the largest number of new Chinese millionaires are living here. They are seeking the most unique and exciting food to show off their statuses. They buy the Chinese Pangolins with extremely high price and entertain their guests or take them as tonic food with their families. Many Chinese Pangolins have been delivered and sold here from surrounding provinces continuously. For the villagers in the mountain districts, they could sell one wild Chinese Pangolin as high as their normal half-year income. As a result, they poach more and more crazily. Even the pangolins in Southeast Asia and Africa have been suffered too.
Li Cheng from Shenzhen has witnessed all these changes and he is clearly aware of the importance and urgency to save the Chinese Pangolins. Our camera crew and he had searched any possible remaining Chinese Pangolins all over China. Li has focused on a hard-to-reach forest in the Pearl River Delta. They applied the poachers' experience of tracing the pangolins and went through a lot to go across the only old-growth forest. Finally, they have found the last wild Chinese Pangolin population in mainland China.
However, he is facing a more difficult problem that the last hope might be dashed because the habitat has been bitterly divided by the hydropower stations. Besides, the poachers have always been lured by the high selling price. Meeting this challenge, Li has sought for help everywhere. With his working experience in the high-tech company, he has designed a thoughtful rescue plan. Our camera crew will record this last-ditch attempt to save this ancient species.
