Literary Hometowns

Literary Hometowns, a documentary series, tells stories of six well-known Chinese writers of the time, namely, Mo Yan (Guan Moye), Jia Pingwa, Liu Zhenyun, A Lai, Chi Zijian, and Bi Feiyu. Born and raised in the rural China from the 1950s to the 1960s, they wrote stories since the reform and opening-up, setting up unique literary landscapes, known as their literary hometowns or kingdoms in world literature, such as “the Northeast Gaomi” by Mo Yan, “Villages in Shangluo” by Jia Pingwa, “the Yanjin World” by Liu Zhenyun, “the rGyalrong Tibetan Area” by A Lai, “the Icy and Snowy North” by Chi Zijian, and “Villages of Rivers and Lakes in Northeast Jiangsu” by Bi Feiyu. The series, focuses the very beginning of their literary lives, uncovers myths in their stories and the way they make hometowns into literary ones.
